Ink Practices

For practicing some still life in ink, I took my main inspiration from Lucinda Rogers work. I primarily used it in my task to draw a room. I had used ink many times before for other art projects since college so I'd like to say I'm pretty familiar with how to work a dip pen. even if I'm not greatly skilled I do have the most fun when I get to play around with ink. One thing I thought was interesting drawing was my different bottles I collect, so it was challenging trying to figure out the odd shapes of them.

For the room task, I wanted to draw my bedroom. It has a lot of stuff going on which I thought would be fun to do and it really was. When referencing Lucinda Rogers art while doing this I liked how she colours in the darkest areas in her pieces, so I did the same with the darkest parts of the objects in my room. She also sometimes uses a single colour to complete the shading soI used watered down ink around where the shadows were darkest.

Self Portraits

I'm not exactly a fan of doing self portraits anymore, but I did enjoy just sitting there drawing through a mirror. It's a lot more trickier than drawing a room personally but I did get more comfortable in the end. The first self portrait I looked at Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. His ink pieces were very loose and flowing.

I tried to get a similar feel and used watered down ink to do some shading like he's seem to done in his work. The third portrait was done using Charles Dana Gibson as reference. I think he has a very specific way he shades so I attempted the same. Overall, I loved playing with ink again.

Week 2 - 3D

Out of the different weekly projects we had, I know that the 3D work was my weakest. I have a lot of difficulty working in 3D and get quite stressed working on it. But I had my go at creating a jellyfish!

Unfortunately, I didn't really look at any 3D artists for reference which was a huge mistake on my part that I hope in the future I can actually remember to look at some. While I did watch some videos of people making jellyfish crafts it wasn't as handy. Unlike my other work, I'll admit and say I did not enjoy doing this.

Still Life Acrylic Paintings

When doing my still life paintings, the artist I used most as reference was Dermot Power. I'm quite a huge fan already of his concept work so I was excited already to get to use it again as research. I decided to research more into his work for Alice in Wonderland, the greyscale work of his was a personal favourite.

In my opinion, I don't think my quality is the greatest, it was tough handling which parts to paint first knowing I was using acrylic paint. Though I did get a lot of enjoyment out of painting my plasma ball.

Still Life Watercolour Paintings

While doing my watercolour pieces I had some difficulty getting back into how it worked. It had been a long time since I last did it (I couldn't even find my watercolour set at first which said a lot) so I felt rusty using it again. I think I still possess some skills I learnt back when it was my main medium. I wasn't a fan of how it looked when I initially finished it but looking back at them now in my sketchbook, I like them. The artist I had researched when doing these was John Singer Sargent. His landscape is gorgeous and I love his use of colour,

Self Portraits (Acrylic)

`For my acrylic self portrait I wanted to research J.C Leyendecker. When I had first seen his work I didn't believe at first that his work was that old as it was such a modern like style. He's another artist I'm a big fan of so I looked forward to doing a self portrait in his style. However, I don't think the outcome was very accurate. since he works with oils and I only had access to acrylic, I was already at a disadvantage. I think my sketch showed a better hint of reference to his style than my finished piece.

Self Portrait (Watercolour)

Ambrose McEvoy was the watercolour artist I researched. I liked his artwork of people, he was very simple yet detailed. I'd like to believe that I got the technique down alright but I know I could of tried to do better. I don't think I gave myself enough time to warm back into using watercolour so my pieces feel a bit stiff in my opinion. However, overall I enjoyed getting back into watercolour again.
