The One Where They Pick - Lyrics

I went and chose Fiona Apple. I’ve heard her name before but I didn’t know any songs so I put them on shuffle and started doing some thumbnails for the first song that came on. The first one was called Ladies and it seemed to be some sort of support towards women. I especially liked the lyrics about the dresses and immediately thought of some elegant women being pleased to be wearing a dress they loved.

After my feedback I decided to have a second go at an illustration using these lyrics. I had a further look into the meaning of the song to get some ideas since i was pretty stumped on how to incorporate the hints of cheating she sings about in the song. I found that in an interview she did, she explained the song was inspired by finding out her partner was cheating on her with another woman and while she was heartbroken she didn't take it out on the woman as she never knew.

I had the idea to do an illustration showing the man romancing both women with no remorse. The first go I had wasn't much of an improvement and didn't turn out well then I had hoped, but I still like the idea I had in mind.

colour variations

Since I wasn't happy with this one either, I wanted to try one last time to get the feeling I wanted down. I started by looking into Harry Clarke after we were shown him during the Monday lecture. Instantly knew he would be a great artist to get inspiration from. 

I wanted to go for a more darker vibe for the next attempt, so the black and white colour scheme felt more fitting for the piece.

For the front cover I mainly took inspiration from the Fetch The Boltcutters album. I used different types of paper texture to get a similar look on the font and illustration.
