Observational Drawing around my street

One of the most annoying things that kept happening during my time drawing outside was the constant drying up of my pens, which made the drawings look scratchy. That paired with it being too cold for my hands (I know I should wear gloves but I despise them) maddest tricky to get down what I was seeing.

I wanted to experiment with these trees more later in the evening when you can just see the silhouettes, but I wasn't allowed out then so most of my drawings have been done with the sun just starting to set. I think it still makes good practice to try and show the light in my drawings.

Thumbnail Designs - Week 1

For one of the first prompts given, I immediately wanted to take inspiration from a few comics. The one I looked at the most was the Future State: Dark Detecticve series. Some of my favourite panels in this are when Bruce gets chased down an alleyway. When it came to finalising my chosen I wanted to keep the style simple and also efficient for myself since I knew I would spend too much time on the ones Im enjoying.

Personally, this is one of my favourite pieces out of the thumbnails for week one. I like the colour palette I used as well as the shadows. the final version came out much better than I expected.

The Tango prompt was tricky for me to get around. I had quite a lot of ideas at first, but with the addiction of a cafe it really threw me off on what to do. in the end I chose to draw a painting in a cafe of the tango, with the same couple having a drink at the table underneath.

For the January Sales prompt, since it was Black Friday recently, I based it off that. I wanted to show the overcrowded claustrophobia of the stores then. I had a reoccurring feature of there being one specific figure a brighter colour who is stuck in-between the crowds and looking uncomfortable.

Mixing this next prompt with a current interest, I used inspiration from the Persona 5 game for the shape of the buildings in the piece. I feel as though I could have found ways to make this look more appealing, but I'm happy with the composition of the piece.

This was probably my weakest piece. the perspective isn't good and I don't think I conveyed the windy day effect much. My idea was to use the ladder to show it was windy by having it bending in weird ways, but I don't think it worked out that well. I'm also not a fan anymore of the colours I used, they just look too odd.

I had a very specific idea when I first looked at the System Error prompt. I wanted to have the pop up warnings reflect in the figures helmet. While I wanted to initially include a glint of an eye to show panic, I just couldn't vision it where it didn't looked too cramped in with the pop ups. I think maybe this piece could have worked out better if I did it traditionally instead of digital like the others.

Thumbnail Designs - Week 2

Just to include a funny coincidence, the day I was working on this piece I got a new card from a game I play that looked very similar to the idea I had in mind, especially the poster in the background.

Good News
When I started to do the next batch of thumbnails, I got into the pattern of creating them in greyscale before colouring. I think for some of them it turned out better than expected, while others lacked anything interesting. I also decided to keep up the retro inspired style in the rest of the thumbnails.

Like the cafe piece, I also struggled with this. I had a good idea in mind to make it an embrace but having them each out to kill one another. at first I was about to scrap it for a different thumbnail as it didn't fit into the restaurant setting. but after some feedback, I knew I could figure out a way around it. I think I solved it alright by keeping them inside an empty restaurant.

The Anniversary
After being demonstrated what not to do with this prompt (making it from outside the place in a front view, it looks boring) I thought to try from panning it inside the plane. while I still didn't do anything more exciting I believe I had a good idea down.

The Big Jump
the last one I did, Genius At Work, definitely shown myself how much more comfortable I was now with the lasso tool. I believe I finished this piece in under an hour and I'm pretty happy with the final outcome. I also think the colours fit very nicely.

Week 3 - M.R James, Whistle and I'll Come To You

Grep Capullo

I'm a fan of his work, especially his sketches. I thought they would be good inspiration.

I had quite the struggle choosing thumbnails. At first I wanted to do one of him looking behind while the unknown figure is right in front of him. however I had a pretty bad few attempts at it and with my limited time, I had to change it to a different idea. I'm mostly just glad I got the piece finished.

Personally I'm not very happy with this piece. I didn't give myself enough time to try out different outcomes, so it just felt too rushed in the end for me. while I wanted to work more on it, maybe using a different brush, I'm alright keeping it in the sketch. I think it keeps it levelled with the fear of being watched.
